Rosen's view of Kurtz's opinion about the press
Since Howard Kurtz is about to visit our school (he's scheduled to give the annual Scripps address on March 21), I was interested to read Jay Rosen's recent argument with Kurtz about whether the Bush administration is systematically decertifying the press.
Rosen argues that the evidence is pretty compelling that the Bush administration has a fundamentally different take on the press than previous presidents. Kurtz is much more blase. Is Kurtz so much a part of the Washington press establishment that he can't see the larger picture? Or are political disagreements coloring the perceptions of those who think this administration is fundamentally more damaging to the press than any other before it?
